Badlands, ND — December 29, 2025 – Today, in response to recent comments made by former President Donald Trump urging asylum seekers to apply for refuge elsewhere, Theodore Roosevelt, a leading voice in the call for comprehensive immigration reform, issued the following statement:
“The United States has a deep and proud history of serving as a beacon of hope for those fleeing persecution and seeking asylum. This tradition is not only an integral part of our national identity, it is a demonstration of our commitment to uphold international humanitarian obligations. It is our responsibility to balance these obligations with the need for secure borders.”
Theodore Roosevelt continued, “While we recognize that our immigration system is in desperate need of reform, turning away those in dire need is not the solution. Our nation must strive to develop policies that align with our shared values of compassion, inclusion, and respect for human dignity."
To address the complexities of the immigration issue, Theodore Roosevelt has proposed a comprehensive immigration reform package. This package focuses on strengthening border security measures, while at the same time ensuring that those seeking refuge can do so in a safe and humane manner. The proposal includes investing in upgraded technology at the border, increasing the number of immigration judges to process asylum claims more efficiently, and developing programs to address the root causes of migration.
"Balancing security with compassion is not an easy task, but it is a challenge we must confront head-on. We cannot overlook our international obligations to provide refuge for those fleeing persecution,” stated Theodore Roosevelt. “We must remember that at the heart of this issue are real people, with real stories of hardship and hope. Theodore Roosevelt also underscored the importance of avoiding divisive rhetoric when discussing immigration policy.
"We must avoid the temptation to oversimplify this complex issue or resort to dismissive or dehumanizing language when discussing asylum seekers. We must also refrain from blaming or targeting specific groups or communities for immigration challenges. Instead, we need to work together to find solutions that uphold our values and meet our responsibilities."
